Do French Immersion students take all of their courses in French at the High School level? No. In grade 9 and 10, students will take their Science (Sciences), Social Studies (Sciences humaines), and French Language (Français langue seconde - immersion) courses in French. In grade 11, they will take French Language and Social Studies courses in French. In grade 12, they will take only a French Language course. The percentage of French language instruction decreases as students move into higher grades. For a list and description of the French Immersion courses offered at Reynolds, click here. What is the Dual Dogwood? Upon successful completion of the French Immersion Program, students will receive 2 diplomas : a British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) and a Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires en Colombie-Britannique. For more information on the Dual Dogwood, please see the Ministry of Education site here.
I am interested in enrolling my child in French Immersion but I am also considering the Centre for Soccer Excellence. Can my child be enrolled in both programs? Yes! Students can be enrolled in both CSE and French Immersion, in fact, we currently have many students in both programs. For more information on the CSE, please click here.
What about Flexible Studies and French Immersion? Unfortunately, due to the course requirements of both programs, students are not able to register for both French Immersion and Flexible Studies. For more information on the Flexible Studies Program, both French and English options, please contact Brad Cunningham at[email protected] or click here.
My child began in grade 6, in the Late Immersion Program. Will they be at a disadvantage compared to the students who have been in the program since kindergarten? We have no evidence to support that students enrolled in the Early French Immersion Program are more successful in Secondary School than their Late Immersion peers. Success and achievement depend on the individual student rather than the entry point into the program.
My child is currently enrolled in a Francophone (French as a first language) Program, is it possible for them to continue their French studies at Reynolds? We are happy to accept Francophone students in our French Immersion Program and do our best to accommodate them. Please be advised, however, that the French Immersion Program was conceived for students learning French as a second or alternate language.
How can my child work on developing their French language skills outside of the classroom? Get as much exposure to the French language as possible! Our library has an extensive French language collection which includes novels, graphic novels, French translations of English novel series, and both fiction and non-fiction resources. Students are strongly encouraged to read in French as much as possible. Please click here to access the Reynolds Library website. In addition, students can watch French language films and television, and most streaming services have the option of choosing the French language track and/or subtitles for TV series and films. If you're going to watch it anyway, why not watch it in French?!
